A qualitative scheme for the nonstationary reconnection of magnetic field lines is proposed which is based on an analysis of asymptotic, exact, and numerical solutions. The proposed scheme can serve as the basis of models of magnetospheric substorms, solar flares, the interaction of the solar wind with the daytime magnetopause, and other explosive phenomena in plasmas.
