A combined analytical and numerical study of the scattering of trapped star orbits ('bananas') in flat galaxies with a spiral wave structure is described. Standing modes localized about the corotation region and with frequencies about the star libration frequency are shown to have a relatively strong detrapping effect. It is suggested that these scattering processes affect the growth and saturation of the spiral wave if it is assumed that these depend on wave-particle resonance processes. The relevant modes can be excited either by interaction with a companion galaxy or, possibly, by an internal instability.
