Expressions are obtained in the approximation of geometrical optics for the scattering cross section and coefficient of reflection of radio waves from a planet with a spherically symmetric, dense atmosphere; the effect of planetary surface roughness is not considered. An analysis of the obtained expressions shows that refraction in the atmosphere causes an additional attenuation of reflected waves; this attenuation should be taken into account when interpreting data acquired in the bistatic and monostatic radar sounding of planets.
