Scaling arguments for minimally coupled scalar field models are generalized to discuss the existence and stability of static, spherically symmetric regular and black hole solutions in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The arguments lead to a generalized Derrick theorem that regular solitons and black holes can not exist if the real scalar field asymptotically goes to the global minimum of the self-interaction potential. It is shown that within the assumption of finite mass function regular solutions are unstable under radial perturbations. For demonstrating how the arguments apply to the black hole stability we consider the scalar field model with an asymmetric parameter. We show that while asymptotically flat black holes of the model are unstable, asymptotically anti-de Sitter ones of the same model can be stable under radial perturbations by virtue of the negative cosmological constant.
