A new approach to a ionospheric Hall and Pedersen conductivity model is presented. Field-aligned currents (FAC) and conductances are computed from a large number of Dynamic Explorer 2 satellite passes. These are used to obtain a statistical relationship between the FAC density and ionospheric Hall and Pedersen conductances. A global fit for the ionospheric conductances is obtained taking into account the local-time dependency of the conductance-FAC relationship. The current density used in the current-conductance relationship is further obtained as an average over a scale length in the ionosphere corresponding to the resolution of the magnetospheric part of the simulation model. We study the performance of the new model in comparison with existing models such as the Hardy model by comparing the model output with DMSP satellite data for one event selected for the Space Weather Metrics Study. The comparison of model results with satellite observations as well as the study of impacts of the ionospheric conductances on magnetotail dynamics is part of the CCMC science-based validation of simulation models for the geospace environment.
