Scientific paper

Advanced avionics architectures and technologies are examined with particular reference to spaceborne and surface systems associated with the Space Exploration Initiative. Particular attention is given to an approach using standardization at the hardware card level, where a generic set of standard processing modules can be configured to accomodate a wide range of vehicle applications and allow for technology evolution and simple integration. In conjunction with other advanced avionics technologies, the standard module approach provides the capability to continually maintain state-of-the-art flight systems, reduce logistics, and realize the cost benefit achieved with modern high-quantity production lines and automated operations.
