Scientific paper

The paper examines the scientific objects, instrumental approach, characteristics, and scientific objectives of SAX (X-ray Astronomy Satellite), an Italian-Dutch program devoted to the investigation of Galactic and extragalactic sources in the energy band 0.1-300 keV. Its scientific objectives are: imaging and broadband spectroscopy over the energy range 0.1 to 10 keV; spectral measurements, spectroscopy, and timing on sources from 3 to 300 keV; and all-sky monitoring for the investigation of long-time variability and localization and study of transients. The payload complement includes: a low-energy concentrator/spectrometer/ a medium-energy concentrator/spectrometer; a high-pressure gas scintillation proportional counter; and a phoswich detector system.
