Data on the magnetosphere provided by the DE satellites are presented. The role of the ionosphere in the earth-space environment is studied. The spectrometers of the DE satellites detected 1 eV polar wind traveling at 14 km/sec and a 10 eV wind traveling at 50 km/sec, and the presence of oxygen with energies of a few hundred eV. Particular attention is given to the quasi-neutrality effect, the measurement of low-energy electrons, the auroral oval, and dark spots in the upper atmosphere caused by meteors. The escape of oxygen from the earth's polar ionosphere; the subauroral red arc; radio noise generated a few hundred km above the auroral atmosphere; and the relation between hihh-altitude weather and solar activity are discussed.
