The use of data obtained from satellite studies for determining the structure of the ionosphere is reviewed. Observing techniques are described with attention to Faraday rotation and differential Doppler or phase. Low-altitude satellite measurements of ionospheric total content reveal latitudinal irregularities produced, for example, by traveling ionospheric disturbances or by auroral zone processes. Geostationary satellites provide continuous records of total content for many fixed locations on the earth, and, through the use of multiple frequencies, the exchange of plasma between the ionosphere and the magnetosphere can be studied. The morphology of ionospheric scintillation has been investigated by means of beacon signals. It is thought that the irregularities responsible for scintillation are created by some form of plasma instability, though perhaps different instability mechanisms operate at different times or latitudes.
