The structure of the subauroral ionosphere was investigated on the basis of the following body of measurements: Intercosmos-19 observations of particle precipitation; Cosmos-900 observations of electron temperature and density; the vertical sounding of ionospheric parameters; measurements of plasma convection from the Zhigansk and Iakutsk stations; and the measurement of 630.0-nm emissions at the Zhigansk station. It is shown that the polar edge of the main trough is formed by precipitations of low-energy electrons in the diffuse auroral zone. It is also shown that plasma convection in the subauroral F-region may be one of the mechanisms responsible for the formation of the main trough.
