The maintenance work required on some Salyut 4 equipment is presented. The servosystem on a solar telescope initially would not focus on the sun and to correct the problem, a group of engineers went to the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory where they developed a solution using a model of the telescope. To implement the solution, the cosmonauts were required to determine the telescope mirror position, which they did by the impromptu use of a medical stethoscope. However, much of Salyut 4's equipment had been built for easy access in case of repair, and special instruments and spare parts were included; e.g., the cosmonauts easily replaced a switch. They also successfully recoated the surface of the telescope mirrors.
