Scientific paper

The Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument on the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite measures the vertical distribution of infrared radiation emitted by various atmospheric gases including ozone, water vapor, nitric oxide, and carbon dioxide. From these measurements we have computed vertical profiles of the rate of radiative cooling in the mesosphere attributable to several vibration-rotation bands of carbon dioxide. Infrared fluxes of radiation and total radiated power are also computed for the full mission timeline, now approaching 8 years in length. These data provide fundamental information on the energy balance and climate of the mesosphere and enable detailed investigation of short and long-term variability including the effects of solar variability. The data also provide a fundamental data record against which general circulation models of the mesosphere can be compared.
