We are carrying our a deep imaging survey with Spitzer using both the IRAC and MIPS detectors to observe the HST-COSMOS 2-square degree field. The Spitzer survey provides vital infrared coverage at 3-160 microns, to complement the extensive multi-wavelength imaging from X-ray to radio (XMM, GALEX, Subaru, NOAO, VLA and CSO) and spectroscopic surveys (VLT and Magellan) of the COSMOS field. The IRAC imaging is being used to derive stellar masses (with minimized extinction) of the nearly 2 million galaxies in the COSMOS field, and the MIPS imaging will be used to estimate star formation rates and AGN activity for enormous samples of galaxies (> 105). For the first time, COSMOS will yield statistics of high-redshift sources free from cosmic variance, and enable the discovery and characterization of relatively rare objects. S-COSMOS is thus the necessary complement to deeper but smaller infrared surveys (e.g. GOODS), and shallower but wider surveys (e.g. SWIRE). Our team plans to immediately release the Spitzer observations, along with our other multi-wavelength COSMOS data and source catalogs, to the astronomical community to ensure maximum scientific return. Support for this work is being being provided through a Research Support Agreement with JPL/Caltech.
