In an investigation of several very blue stars for which higher dispersion spectra had been obtained, it was found that one object has quite clear Balmer series emission and may be a previously unrecognized cataclysmic binary in the constellation Gruis. The star had first been detected in the Sonneberg variable star survey by Hoffmeister (1949), who thought it might be an RW Aur type. It was subsequently measured on over 200 photographic plates by Siedel (1957). An investigation of the object (S5150 Gruis = RZ Gru) is discussed. Three spectra at 45 A/mm were obtained in 1980 July using the Image Photon Counting System on a 1.9-m telescope. The smoothed spectrum obtained is presented in a graph. The relatively narrow emission features coincide with the Balmer series of hydrogen to at least n = 9. Magnitude variations observed amount to a secular brightening by about 0.04 mag in 30 min with the superposed 'flare' of magnitude 0.04 having a rise time of about a minute.
