The authors report the first laboratory observation of I. R. Rydberg transitions of neutral magnesium previously observed in the Sun. These observations give a definitive confirmation of the identification of these transitions. The Zeeman effect on the most intense lines has been carefully analyzed in order to provide an accurate calibration of the solar magnetic field.
