The distribution of Rb and Cs between aqueous solution and single crystals of carnallite, kainite, and halite has been investigated using radioactive tracers. The distribution coefficient was larger than unity for Rb in carnallite, in all other cases it was smaller than unity. Incorporation of Rb and Cs into carnallite was found to decrease with increasing temperature. Incorporation decreases also with decreasing K / Mg ratio in the carnallite equilibrium solution, resembling progressive crystallization in natural systems. Using the experimentally obtained distribution coefficients, the theoretical Rb and Cs distribution was calculated for a salt profile crystallized from sea water.
