The rotational motion of a small interplanetary particle is important both in affecting its orbital motion through the Yarkovsky effect and also the way it ablates on entering the Earth's atmosphere. We show that the absorption and subsequent re-emission of solar radiation will continually decrease the angular velocity of the particle. The result is analogous to the Poynting-Robertson effect, in which the absorption and re-emission of the Sun's radiation gives rise to a retardation of the orbital motion. The rotational damping provides a mechanism limiting the spin arising from collisional and other effects and thus leads to the possibility of equilibrium.
