The authors present a model for the angular momentum loss of late type main sequence stars. This loss is thought to be due to a magnetic torque operating on the stellar wind. Assuming that only the convective envelope is braked, an excellent agreement is obtained between the model and the data for the secular decrease of the rotational velocity of G type stars. The observed behaviour of the rotational period between spectral types F2 to G2 is also adequately reproduced. Furthermore, using the observed relationship between chromospheric or coronal activity, and the rotational velocity, the behaviour of both types of activity can be reproduced as a function of stellar mass, amongst relatively young stars. On the other hand, the authors find that braking is underestimated for the oldest and least massive stars. This might indicate that the area covered by magnetically active regions is larger in less massive stars.
