The line-of-sight velocity field of the solar-limb surge of October 11, 1980, observed at Yunnan Observatory, showed a rotating motion. The velocity of rotation and the true ascending speed of the surge were determined from H-alpha observations. An accompanying expansion at several tens of km/s and a pulsed phenomenon with a period of a few minutes at the root of the surge are also observed. It is pointed out that the steep density gradient between the surge plasma and its surrounding atmosphere causes double-pole diffusion, and that the electric field generated by the double-pole diffusion causes electric drift of the surge plasma, and hence the rotation.
