H Ii Galaxies: Helium Lines, H Ii Galaxies: X-Ray Sources
Scientific paper
A non-negligible number of H II galaxies display high-ionization spectra with the presence of the narrow He II λ4686 Å recombination line which cannot be explained by photoionization by normal O stars. One hypothesis is to say that this line is due to photoionization by the extreme luminous X-ray sources present in these galaxies. To test this, the authors compiled a sample of X-ray emitting H II galaxies from the literature and cross-correlated it with the ROSAT archive and their own PSPC and HRI observations. Most of the H II galaxies studied exhibit luminous X-ray sources but their positions are not systematically spatially correlated with the sites of high-ionization and ongoing star formation.
