History Of Astronomy: Refraction

Shortly after Ole Rømer invented the meridian circle in 1704, he tried to compensate for the shortcomings in the measured star-positions. In his notebook, the author discusses the refraction based on a physical model, and he compares the results with barometer readings. His method to calculate the refraction shows fine agreement with Bessel's accurate measurements of the mean refraction.
