A nondestructive magnetic method is used in a detailed study of black magnetic microspherules extracted from the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary at Petriccio, Italy. A rock magnetic characterization by hysteresis, isothermal remanent magnetization acquisition, demagnetization, and thermomagnetic measurements identifies the magnetic minerals in the microspherules as ferrites with a near magnetite composition and soft magnetic behavior. It is suggested that further susceptibility studies on samples from other locations around the world may reveal a global distribution pattern and indicate the site(s) at which catastrophic impact took place.
