The Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) event-driven automated pipeline is comprised of multiple processes distributed across many machines with the expectation that each process will run indefinitely. In order for such continuous operation to occur without disruption or operator intervention the pipeline must anticipate and handle in as transparent a manner as possible the irregularities in processing that sometimes occur. A crashed machine, for instance, is likely to cause the processing of one or more observations to hang unless the failure is identified quickly and appropriate corrective action is taken.
This paper describes the basic operation of the SOLIS automated pipeline and the roles of the major pipeline processes. It then shows how robustness features of the SOLIS pipeline ensure timely recovery from unexpected conditions and exceptions, allowing for very stable and nearly continuous operation of the automated pipeline.
