We show how the spectral analysis code ROBFIT has been used in analyzing gamma-rays output from Supernova 1987A. The observations were performed using the GRAD detector which was on-board a balloon launched from McMurdo Station, Antarctica on January 8 1986. A spectral analysis code, ROBFIT, capable of distinguishing peak at the noise level used to analyze the data. ROBFIT is a general purpose spectral analysis package which as been developed at the University of Florida.
ROBFIT represents gamma-ray peak shapes and background continuum as combinations of spline functions. The background is fitted over the entire spectrum using a robust fitting technique. This removes the need to independently fit small regions of a spectrum which can lead to mis-representation of the background under certain conditions. The code has the ability to model any peak shape as a combination of spline functions. Both background and peaks are adjusted simultaneously until χ2 is minimized. Then the background can be modified and new peaks searched for a new minimum found. This iterative procedure is carried out until a user supplied limit is reached. ROBFIT then outputs peak positions, widths strengths and their associated errors.
