Comet 1, the first of three missions to be flown under an $85 million NASA contract, will carry crystal growth, thin-film materials and other experiments for 17 nonprofit industrial, academic and governmental research centers involved in NASA's Commercial Development of Space program. The commercial derivative of the Comet, designated 'Westar' is expected to be a fully integrated space-transportation and recovery service.
