The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique of Hirata et al. (1989) was used to detect amounts of Re and Os and Os-187/Os-186 isotopic ratios in 12 iron meteorites of various groups and in five stony iron meteorites. It was found that these meteorites have a wide variation in absolute abundances of Re and Os covering nearly four orders of magnitude, with a very high correlation coefficient (0.996). It is suggested that the highly coherent and widely fractionated Os, Re, and Ir abundances can be understood as reflecting an incipient condensation of the refractory metallic particles such as Os-W-Re alloy and the incorporation or mixing of these particles with a gaseous major phase chiefly composed of Fe, Ni, and silicates.
