Peculiar M supergiants similar to VX Sgr and VY CMa are characterized by very red visual colors, a flux excess near 9,000 A (I band) and a substantial excess longwards of 2 microns. HV11417 has recently been reported to be the first similar star discovered in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The discovery of another star of this type, RG0044-2958, is reported which is more unusual in that it is located at a distance of 2.5 Mpc, and is not associated with a detectable galaxy. It is probably the brightest star in a very low surface brightness dwarf galaxy in the Sculptor group.
