We introduce a number of education research based innovations used in our introductory physics for nonscientists course that have dramatically increased student engagement and learning. These innovations included: a novel student-centered presentation of the material; well-defined learning goals; elaborate PowerPoint presentations; active use of "clickers"; computer animations and in-class demonstration experiments requiring student predictions; carefully designed and hard homework assignments with extensive essays; and opportunities for informal group collaborations both in and out-of the classroom. We have numerous indications of the success of these efforts and it is also a heck of a lot more fun to teach!
