Compression of digital image and video data plays an important role in reducing the transmission and storage cost for visual communication. However, when bit rates become very low, most compression algorithms yield visually annoying artifacts that highly degrade the perceptual quality of image and video data. To achieve high bit rate reduction while maintaining the best possible perceptual quality, postprocessing techniques provide one attractive solution. There has been a significant amount of research activities in post- processing of compressed image/video over the past decade. Some of them ar developed from the image enhancement point of view while others are from image restoration. The goal of this paper is to provide a review and analysis of recent developments in post-processing techniques. A discussion on compression artifacts is given first. Then , we survey several algorithms that reduce compression artifacts. Finally, we describe the current bottleneck and future directions in this field.
