Worldwide maps of electron precipitation are obtained remotely with a separation of spatial and temporal variations by sensing the bremsstrahlung X-rays produced by incident electrons. The review is limited to X-rays with energy greater than 20 keV, and electron fields and energy spectra are derived over a broad range of energies under daytime and nighttime conditions. Advantages of the method are discussed, including the mapping of electron precipitation over an entire hemisphere, unique separation of spatial and temporal variations, and fast time resolution. Data already acquired provide information on the long-term morphology of the total fluxes, and energy spectra of bremsstrahlung X-rays emitted from a large area show that pronounced longitude structure commonly occurs in X-ray emissions. The spatial and temporal distributions are measured without ambiguities for various types of sporadic events, and preliminary measurements provide information on the total precipitation electron inputs. Recommendations are also made for further improvements in the technique.
