We present continent-scale very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images, obtained with the European VLBI Network (VLBI), of submillimetre-selected ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at high-redshift. These resulting maps, which have a synthesized beam size of 30 milliarcsec FWHM, are the highest resolution images of high-redshift starbursts achieved to date, and are the first capable of isolating ultra-compact radio cores -- which must be produced by active supermassive black holes (SMBHs) -- from more extended starburst. We identify these ultra-compact cores in two of our three targets. This is an observational confirmation of current models of the co-evolution of SMBHs and stellar populations, and is consistent with submillimetre-selected galaxies representing transition objects in the merger-driven transformation of gas-rich spirals into massive, passively evolving, spheroidal galaxies. Though ours is a biased sample, and therefore our results more difficult to extendto the demographics of submillimetre galaxies more broadly, this represents a new and promising method for determining the relative bolometric contributions of SMBHs and starbursts to the tremendous energy output of these objects.
