An atmospheric correction algorithm was applied to retrieve the visible and near-IR reflectances, the broadband surface albedo and the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from reflected solar radiances measured by the visible and near-IR channels of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) at the top of the atmosphere. The algorithm was applied to full resolution images of Central Europe under relatively cloud-free conditions. The absorption of water vapour and ozone, and the scattering of aerosols and molecules were taken into account. The aerosol optical depth was calculated from the direct spectral radiance values measured by satellite over the Adriatic Sea or the Lake Balaton and from the observed visibility data. The narrow band reflectances, the broad band surface albedo and the vegetation index values before and after the atmospheric correction were compared.
