Construction and scientific objectives of the Lyman-alpha-photometer in the dial satellite as well as the effects of the photolytic decomposition of the filling gas nitric oxide of the ionization chamber detectors are described. The data that were obtained for March through May 1970 are presented and discussed. The measurements clearly show the existence of an asymmetric hydrogen distribution. They close a gap in the OGO-4 observations. Furthermore, the measurements make evident that a strict correlation of the exospheric temperature to solar activity parameters only is not possible. An estimation of the Lyman-alpha-background is in good agreement with the measurements of the OGO-5 satellite. Finally, an up to now never registered reaction of the geocoronal Lyman-alpha-airglow was found.
