We have recently completed construction of the Infrared Multi-Object Spectrometer (IRMOS) and report on its first commissioning runs at Kitt Peak National Observatory. A team from the Space Telescope Science Institute, the Goddard Space Flight Center, and Kitt Peak National Observatory developed IRMOS using a MEMS array of small mirrors to provide a computer controlled slit mask. This MEMS array is a Texas Instruments 848 x 600 element DMD device. Equipped with a Rockwell Scientific Hawaii-1 infrared detector, IRMOS provides imaging and R 300, 1000, and 3000 multi-object spectroscopy in the J, H, and K bands (plus R 1000 in Z). On its initial observing run in September, IRMOS demonstrated the anticipated optical image quality, good stability, and DMD contrast meeting or exceeding expectations. We also report on tests scheduled for November and early December on both the 4-meter and 2.1-meter telescopes.
