The results of polarimetric, spectrophotometric, and radiometric investigations of asteroids are presented, and the problems that will be the subject of future investigations are briefly described. It is noted that the accumulation of observational material has already outstripped the ability to interpret it. Progress in the future will therefore depend on theoretical advances and a more extensive use of the resources of laboratory simulation. Further progress in the study of the asteroid belt will be related to the observation of the fainter members, that is, asteroids about 20 km and smaller in size.
