Parameters in common among various models of the Martian gravity field are considered, along with effective computational techniques. The best resolution of the planet's field is produced when harmonics up to ninth order are calculated, and a twelfth order model, based on radio tracking data from the Mariner 9 and Vikings 1 and 2 spacecraft, has been formulated. The model considers a biaxial or triaxial ellipsoid to estimate surface levels on Mars. Values are presented for separate approximations of the surface levels of the northern and southern hemispheres. Differences between the calculated values and the physical surface are discussed, together with the appearance of latitudinal waves in the areoid and the physical surface. Techniques are presented for calculating the waves causing surface asymmetry, characterizing triaxiality, hemispheric asymmetry, the equatorial deformation, the triaxiality of the northern and southern hemispheres, and a longitudinal wave in the areoid. Finally, a method of determining the centers of mass of inhomogeneities on Mars is defined.
