Milagrito was a preliminary phase of the Milagro experiment and operated from February 1997 to May 1998. Milagrito was a water-Cherenkov detector for air showers produced by gamma rays (and background cosmic rays). The data have been studied for emission from several nearby blazars. Emission from Markarian 501 is detected coincident with the large flare observed in 1997 by several atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. .
