A three-dimensional self-consistent model is used for a numerical investigation of variations of the composition, temperature, and circulation of neutral gas in the thermosphere as a function of the level of solar activity. It is shown that the responses of the upper and lower thermosphere to changes in the solar activity level can be substantially different, a factor which should be taken into account in the development and application of empirical models of the thermosphere.
