The resonant rotations of a satellite in the plane of a polar elliptical orbit under the effect of the magnetic and gravitational fields of the earth are considered with reference to the magnetic-moment and gravity-gradient stabilization of satellites. Attention is given to the principal resonances corresponding to the sensing of the direction fixed in absolute space, the current radius-vector of the orbit, and the current magnetic line of force. The extremal properties and stability of such motions are investigated. It is shown that the eccentric oscillations of the satellite can be compensated completely by the magnetic field, and that strict attitude stability with respect to the elliptical-orbit radius-vector can be achieved.
