We aim to search for extended X-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS), in the direction of Cygnus X-2. This is driven by the recent significant detection by our group of EXAFS absorption in spectra in the line of sight towards Sco X-1, which opens up a new frontier in the study of interstellar dust. We now have the possibility to probe the details of the composition and solid structure of interstellar dust particles by direct observations. By resolving EXAFS structures in different line of sights we will enable a clearer identification of the solid materials of which the dust particles are made of and will help to resolve questions on the generation and evolution of interstellar dust particles.
