Galaxies' ecology and evolution are driven by recycling and accretion of gas within the interstellar medium. These in turn are governed by poorly-understood physical processes acting on small scales. By observing in one particular sightline, toward omega Centauri, we can study several key features of these processes: (1) accretion of gas onto the Galactic Disc, by observing a disrupted high-velocity cloud; (2) small-scale chemical, kinematic and morphological structures in the foreground ISM, through comparison with other tracers such as dust emission and atomic and molecular optical line absorption; (3) the unexplained removal of gas from globular clusters, by observing omega Centauri itself.
