Galaxies: Distances And Redshifts, Cosmology: Theory, Distance Scale

Scientific paper

Recent determinations of the Hubble constant by Pierce et al. and Freedman et al. indicate that, according to standard theory, the Universe is younger than its oldest stars. Also, statistical analysis of redshift-distance data at intermediate redshifts by Segal & Nicoll shows that redshift is approximately proportional to the square of distance in this intermediate range, thus ruling out any explanation of the observations based on a nearly empty universe and residual small errors. These difficulties may be resolved by finite transformation to conformally flat space-time coordinates. Total redshift remains unchanged, but a varying speed of light and elapsed time are replaced by a constant speed of light and absolute distance. The change to absolute distance accounts well for the observations on the basis of a closed universe.
