Subglacial lake systems offer the potential of discovering important information about evolutionary processes and unusual life forms, while also representing physical and biological analogues for other icy worlds in our solar system. Because of legitimate environmental concerns and legal constraints, there is a need to plan research on these systems in a manner that minimizes harmful cross contamination while maximizing scientific returns. Scientists involved in space missions to other planets and solar system bodies have faced similar concerns and constraints for decades, and routinely integrate planetary protection considerations into mission planning and design. By comparing and contrasting the planetary protection and environmental issues for astrobiology and polar research, it is possible to identify lessons learned that may be helpful in long range research planning for subglacial lakes. As the science community continues its multi-pronged, multidisciplinary efforts to study subglacial lakes, it can borrow more than just relevant science and technology from other fields. It is also important to acknowledge that public perceptions, beliefs, and concerns can become complications or impediments for proposed research. Ultimately, overall success in studying subglacial lake systems may well depend on understanding how to balance technical and scientific needs with legitimate legal, environmental and societal concerns associated with research activities.
