In this paper, the progress of research on the cycle of solar activity is summarized and analyzed. The length of one cycle of solar activity has ranged from only a few days to nearly hundred years, but the sunspot cycle has a prominent mean period of 11 years. The cycle length from a few days to several months is possible in the peak period of solar activity, the cycle is helpful for the medium-term predictions of solar activity and research on the weather. Various kinds of mathematical description for the prominent mean period in the 11 years of solar cycle are also introduced in this paper.
