Onboard software was developed for the Infrared Astronomical Satellite
(IRAS). During the first week after launch a hardware failure occurred
in the satellite, seriously endangering mission success. By rewriting
onboard software it is possible to cope with this problem. The
observations can be fully carried out according to plan.
