Atmospheric temperature can be sounded remotely by observing the
emission from carbon dioxide in its 15 μ m band. The principles of
design of suitable instrumentation for such observation are reviewed. An
instrument employing a selective chopper enables emission from higher
altitudes to be selected than is possible with conventional instruments.
