Optical Glint Detection
Scientific paper
In the first part of this thesis, I present a complete analysis of optical glint detection and glint brightness data from the LAser GEODynamic Satellite (LA-GEOS) collected over a period spanning from 1976 to December of 1996. This analysis not only consists of the determination of the spacecraft spin-rate for 33 independent dates, but also the determination of the spin-axis orientation for 29 dates, with an accuracy on the order of a few degrees. The half-life for the spin-rate decay is determined to be 2.11 years. The tools developed for the analysis of these data sets are presented, along with a quantified analysis of errors in the measurements. In addition to the basic analysis tools developed, several new techniques have been developed. These will allow for continued observation of the satellite well beyond the period for which the spin rate has slowed significantly. The second part of this thesis presents the analysis and results of several sets of observations performed at the European Southern Observatory as well as with the Hubble Space Telescope. I first introduce the basic concepts of image convolution and deconvolution, then proceed to study and explain features observed in image data obtained from ESO through a computer modelling effort. These same data are then re-analyzed after deconvolution to show that post-processing of adaptive optic images can further improve the images. Color analysis of these data is performed, and the results are found to be consistent with those of earlier studies. Finally, high-resolution analysis of several HST images show that there was no ultra-violette brightening of the Eta-Carinae from 1991 to 1994 as has been previously suggested. These data also revealed a second ejection of fragments in late 1979, as well as the observation of a previously unreported fragment which may be the result of either the '79 eruption or a third, more recent eruption.
