The paper describes the main characteristics of the deep space missions (DSMs), including the joint ESA-NASA Comet Nucleus Sample and Return (CNSR)-Rosetta mission, and the joint NASA/ESA Cassini Mission with its probe (HUYGHENS). Particular attention is given to the operational characteristics of the microwave sensors used on these missions and to the major constraints to the design of a DSM.
