The 18 km wide El'gygytgyn impact crater is located at 67°29'N, 172°5'E within the Anadyr Plateau of eastern Siberia. Isotopic studies, by Layer (MAPS, v. 35, p. 591-599, 2000), indicate a formation age of 3.58 +/- 0.04 Ma. A 12 km wide lake occupies the center of the crater. Local target rocks of the Anadyr Plateau consist of a mid-Cretaceous volcanic sequence (the Okhotsk-Chukotka Volcanic Field). The majority of the crater lies within a zone characterized largely by andesitic to rhyolitic tuffs and ignimbrites of primarily acidic composition; however some subalkaline basaltic andesites have been identified in the southwest quadrant (Belyi and Raikevich, Moscow Bulletin About Tests of Nature, Geologic Division, v. 71, p. 56-72, 1996). We are assessing the utility of satellite image data for discriminating volcanic lithologies and for identifying any possible outliers of ejected impact debris. Supervised classification of four Landsat images and six high-resolution IKONOS multispectral images relies on training areas selected from a 1998 geological map produced by Belyi and Belaya. Our goal is to evaluate spectral variability within mapped volcanic units and to identify any unmapped regions with similar spectral signatures. Hindrances include snow patches, thick cloud patches, long shadows, and sparse vegetation. These factors are taken into account during the classification process, using sophisticated spectral masking algorithms.
