It is pointed out that recent relativistic theories describing dissipative phenomena have a common feature. According to this feature, the constitutive equations of the theories contain relaxation terms which imply finite speeds for the propagation of dissipative disturbances. The terms take into account the relaxation proper times of the irreversible processes. In the present investigation the standard cosmological model is used as a basis for an analysis of the relative importance of the relaxation term in the constitutive equation for the viscous pressure. Attention is also given to the contribution provided by the relaxation term to the entropy generation in the leptonic period of the universe.
